What is Mental Fitness?

You are physically fit when you are strong, powerful, fast, flexible and demonstrate endurance. You are mentally fit when you are focused, creative, resilient and demonstrate control and balance.

You take a proactive approach to physical fitness through nutrition, exercise and rest. Consider mental fitness in the same way and adopt simple practices to help unlock your potential and discover new levels of performance....to reach your Peak State.

Issue

The benefits of a proactive approach to physical fitness are widely known but most people consider their mental health only in terms of reacting to, or preventing problems.

APPROACH

For decades, athletes have understood the benefits of training the mind as well as the body, in order to unlock their potential and help them perform at their best. Peak State takes these lessons and helps to incorporate them into a daily routine for all.

Method

Peak State is a social enterprise that works in partnership with organisations to produce tailored communication, education and digital content to equip a community with the information and practical tools to promote mental fitness.

UK Defence COMMUNITY

Prior to founding Peak State, the co-founders led the development of HeadFIT; a legacy project from the Heads Together campaign and developed in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence to support the mental health and wellbeing of serving personnel, their families and veterans.

In doing so, they helped to change the understanding of mental fitness within the community; the programme continues to drive change as HeadFIT is incorporated into mandatory training for all members of the UK Armed Forces during 2021 and beyond.

Founders’ Story

Nathan Jones and David Wiseman share a history of service and of sporting success. Nathan broke his spine during a dramatic flying incident in which he saved the lives of 200 passengers and David still carries a bullet in his chest from the conflict in Afghanistan.

Prior to joining the Royal Air Force, Nathan was a professional rugby player and David has climbed some of the world’s highest mountains. Both have experienced success at multiple Invictus Games.

Their joint experiences of adversity and subsequent post-traumatic growth combined with their sporting backgrounds, military ethos and passion for driving systemic change to help others, have led them to develop Peak State.
